About the race

The ZOWL liga 2026 – 7. kolo in Lukoran offers four distinct distances: 300m, 500m, 1100m, and 1500m. Scheduled for August 9, 2026, this event takes place within the sheltered waters of the Ugljan coast, organized by KDP Donat. Swimmers compete in a maritime setting characterized by a long-standing human history, where the environment remains deeply connected to its ancient origins, dating back to the Roman name 'Laucaranus'.

Historical waters and landmarks

As you navigate the course, the landscape reveals layers of regional power and faith. The area near Zmorasnji Lukoran contains the ruins of a Gothic church, which local accounts attribute to 14th-century monks from Egypt. Further along the coastline, the influence of the Venetian Republic remains a constant presence. The baroque villa in Sutomišćica, constructed in 1686, served as the administrative hub where Venetian officials finalized their duties before the collapse of their regional authority in 1797. High above the water, the Fort of St. Michael stands as a sentinel, its foundations dating back to a 6th-century Byzantine establishment, later reinforced during the 1202 Fourth Crusade. These structures provide a tangible backdrop to the swim, linking the current athletic effort to the strategic maritime conflicts of the past, such as the 1345 siege that saw the city of Zadar contested for over a year.

The local atmosphere

The morning light over this part of the Adriatic holds a specific cultural significance, having inspired the poet Petar Preradovic to pen 'Zora puca'. For those seeking a longer challenge, the Preko–Zadar Swimming Marathon takes place just four days prior to this event, providing a contrasting experience in the nearby channel. While the waters around the Zadar region feature unique phenomena like the wave-powered Sea Organ, the Lukoran course remains focused on the tranquil, protected sea conditions typical of the August season. The site of the tiny island of Galovac, with its 15th-century monastery, and the historic gardens of Osljak island, offer swimmers a visual history of the Dalmatian coast during their transit.

Things to do nearby

The weekend in Lukoran centers on the maritime lifestyle. Visitors often explore the coastline via kayak or SUP to reach the secluded coves near the monastic ruins. Local hospitality focuses on gastronomic traditions, with frequent opportunities for olive oil and local wine tastings. For those preferring land-based activity, the trails leading up to the St. Michael fortress provide panoramic views of the Zadar archipelago, making it a common route for pre-race trekking.
