About the race
Born in Vitória in 1995, swimmer Carolina Bilich Queiroz grew up with the unique geography of this coastal capital as her training ground. Before she represented Brazil on the global stage, she navigated the same waters that challenge participants of the Travessia da Vitória. The bay itself, an estuary fed by the Bubu and Santa Maria de Vitória rivers, is defined by a narrow entrance guarded by the historic Fort of São Francisco Xavier de Piratininga, a sentinel that has watched over these maritime defenses for centuries.
Navigating the bay
As you head out from Praia de Camburi, the shoreline offers a distinct view of the local Atlantic Forest biome, where restinga vegetation and mangroves fringe the sandbanks. Looking inland, you may spot the silhouette of the Pedra da Cebola, a granite formation shaped by erosion into a likeness of an onion. Swimmers must remain aware that these waters are subject to the influence of the cold Falklands oceanic current, which occasionally brings sharp temperature drops to the region.
Local athletes often balance their calendar between various regional events; those who find their rhythm here frequently return for the longer distances offered at the Travessia Capixaba de Ferro in September. The city's landscape has been physically transformed over the last century, with land reclamation projects merging 50 original islands into the current coastline. Whether you are aiming for a podium finish or testing your endurance in the 2026 edition, you will be swimming through a history marked by both strategic defense and rapid urban expansion, including the industrial presence of the Port of Tubarão at the edge of the beach.

You can also rent kayaks or SUP boards to explore the calmer sections of the estuary, or visit the historic city center to see the architectural results of centuries of land reclamation.
