About the race

The journey to the Egadi Islands begins with the slow approach of the hydrofoil across the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the jagged silhouette of Favignana gradually emerges from the morning haze. As you step onto the quay, the air carries the scent of salt and the distant, rhythmic clatter of boats in the harbor, signaling the start of a weekend defined by the sheer scale of the Egadi Ultra Swim. This 20km marathon is a demanding test of endurance that bridges two distinct worlds: the bustling, history-laden shores of Favignana and the raw, quiet wilderness of Levanzo.

A landscape of stone and currents

Once in the water, the geography of the islands dictates every stroke. You are swimming through an environment shaped by centuries of extraction, where the coastline is marked by deep, geometric scars of calcarenite quarries that once provided the building blocks for the region's architecture. As you push toward Levanzo, the water shifts in intensity, reflecting the shadow of the 314-meter Santa Caterina Castle, a fortress that has stood as a silent sentinel over these straits since the Norman era. The race logistics are designed to manage the unpredictable nature of these channels, utilizing dedicated kayak support to ensure safety as you traverse the stretch between the islands. If you are seeking a shorter, more contained experience, the calendar also features The Levanzo Island Loop, which runs concurrently and offers a more focused look at the northern reaches of the archipelago.

Navigating history

Beyond the physical effort, the swim acts as a passage through the layers of the Mediterranean’s past. As you round the northern tip of Levanzo, the light from the 1858 Capo Grosso Lighthouse guides your path, rising 68 meters above the sea. This water is the site of the ancient Battle of the Aegates, the 241 B.C. conflict that ended the First Punic War. Even the more modern history of the islands feels present; the story of the 1943 liberation, where two officers effectively 'captured' the islands with a three-dollar bribe for a local fishing boat, underscores the singular, resourceful nature of the Egadi. The course includes a single, critical nutrition station, a necessary lifeline in an environment where the currents can dictate the pace as much as your own technique. You will finish by navigating the approach to the harbor, passing the quiet, sun-bleached structures that define the island's character.
