The Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club wakes long before dawn on race day, its members preparing the beach that has defined local water safety since 1907. While swimming, participants may notice the memorial in nearby Marks Park, which honors the victims of targeted violence that occurred on these cliffs between 1970 and 2010. Navigating these currents requires awareness of the southern end, where the 'Backpackers' Rip' creates a deceivingly smooth surface that masks high-velocity water movement. Nature frequently asserts itself during the event; migratory paths for whales and dolphins often pass near the coast from March to May and again in late autumn. Lucky observers might spot a fairy penguin navigating the surf zone. Swimmers are protected by segments of underwater netting, though the open nature of the bay means the environment remains dynamic.
