About the race

In 1557, Bernardino de Cárdenas commissioned the construction of a fortress to secure the coastline against the persistent threat of Berber pirate raids. Within five years, this Castillo-Fortaleza was bristling with cannons, marking a turning point in the defensive strategy of the Santa Pola region. Today, the landscape is defined by the same horizon that once prompted the construction of the 1552 Watchtower, a masonry structure built to spot enemy ships lurking near the island. Swimmers lining up for this 5,900-meter crossing traverse that very history, moving from the protected shores of Tabarca back to the mainland, just as local patrols once monitored these same channels.

The water and the route

As you exit the protected sanctuary of the Tabarca Marine Reserve, the water shifts from the calm shallows near the island to the open Mediterranean, rich with biodiversity. The crossing demands navigation through an area where, historically, naval strategy was paramount, such as the site of the ancient Roman fleet that once anchored in the harbor before its destruction. While the challenge is direct, the visual markers remain constant: the lighthouse at Cabo de Santa Pola stands as a silent sentinel at 143 meters, its foundations resting on the remains of the 16th-century Atalayola tower. As you approach the coastline, keep an eye on the adjacent salt marshes, where flamingos and black-winged stilts are frequently visible in the protected wetlands.

Race day and logistics

The XIX Travesía Tabarca-Santa Pola is a cornerstone of the Spanish open water calendar, having first been held in 1996. Organized by the Club Natación Alone, the event is strictly capped at 1,400 participants for safety, despite receiving over 3,000 pre-registration requests annually. This high demand and the complex logistics of moving swimmers from the island to the mainland necessitate the firm entry limits and the support of roughly 200 kayakers. For those looking to bridge their season with another major challenge, the UltraOceanMan Tabarca follows a different pacing in May, offering a varied perspective on these same currents. The event remains a benchmark for distance swimmers, testing endurance across a straight-line course that has linked the island to the peninsula for nearly three decades.

Where to stay

Santa Pola offers a variety of stays ranging from functional boutique hotels near the harbor to family-run apartments closer to the Salinas. You will find several camping options along the coast, which are particularly convenient for early-morning race logistics. Prices generally hover between €80 and €150 per night during the July season, though booking well in advance is essential given the influx of 1,400 swimmers and their support crews.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the race, the area is defined by its Roman industrial history, particularly the archaeological site of the ancient fish-salting factory near the port. You can explore the Santa Pola Salinas, a protected bird sanctuary ideal for trekking or birdwatching, or take a kayak out to observe the geological features of the fossilized reef at the cape. Local gastronomy is centered on fresh catch from the port, with numerous spots offering traditional salt-crusted fish dishes.
