The history of Waging am See is rooted in the legacy of the Bajuwaren tribes, who settled the region after the Roman withdrawal and named it after their leader, Uuago. This strategic location later flourished during the Middle Ages as a vital node on the lower saline road, which channeled wealth and trade from the Reichenhall salt works toward Wasserburg am Inn. Today, the town sits in a slightly different position than it did centuries ago: in 1867, the drainage of the Götzinger Achen forced the water level of the Waginger See down by two meters, effectively pushing the shoreline back and leaving the original waterfront town elevated above the modern beach.

Swimming in Bavaria's Warmest Lake

Swimmers entering the water at Strandcamping Waging on June 13, 2026, will experience what is statistically the warmest lake in Upper Bavaria. During the summer, surface temperatures frequently climb toward 27 °C, providing a comfortable environment for the annual long-distance event organized by the Alpen-Open-Water-Cup. While the lake provides a tranquil setting, those in the water can scan the horizon for distinct landmarks that reveal the scale of the surrounding basin. Looking toward the village of Tettelham, the Schlossberg rises 597 meters, topped by the ruins of Obertettelham Castle and a chapel established in 1947. Closer to the water's edge, the parish church of St. Martin remains a focal point, its Baroque and Rococo stucco details visible from the course as swimmers navigate the gentle curves of the shoreline. The event, which has grown from local roots to a reliable fixture for regional endurance athletes, offers a clear vantage point of these cultural markers while participants push through their chosen distances in the temperate water.
