Vuelta de Obligado — San Pedro

The VOB 18K is an annual point-to-point marathon swim held in the Paraná River, scheduled for November 14, 2026. Participants tackle a long-distance course that begins at the historic site of Vuelta de Obligado and concludes at Camping América in San Pedro. The event requires a high degree of preparation, with swimmers needing to demonstrate a 1,000-meter pace of under 22 minutes to qualify. The entry fee is 250,000 ARS, covering logistics including transport to the start, medical support, and timing services.

The river and the battle

As you enter the water at the Vuelta de Obligado, you are swimming through a channel that narrows to just 700 meters. This geography was the focal point of the 1845 naval confrontation, where Argentine forces famously deployed massive iron chains across the river to impede an invading Anglo-French fleet. The defenders employed innovative tactics, including the first use of Congreve rockets in South America, to repel the advanced French Paixhans guns and Peysar rifled cannons. Today, the water remains a symbol of national sovereignty, commemorated annually on November 20. The swim is structured in two stages: an initial 5.5 km controlled-pace segment, where groups follow designated lead kayaks, followed by a competitive push through the San Pedro creek. Those who prefer a shorter challenge might look toward the events in San Pedro occurring just a day later.

Navigating the landscape

Throughout the 18-kilometer journey, the scenery shifts from the rugged riverbanks of the Paraná to the cultivated orchards of the surrounding region, famous for its peach and citrus production. You will find the water temperature ranging between 23°C and 26°C in mid-November, though visibility is generally low. Navigation is straightforward if you remain in the center of the main channel. Safety is managed through three mandatory hydration stations and a strictly enforced grouping system during the first leg. Swimmers finishing the course must navigate past the ARA Irigoyen vessel, using the final buoy as a marker to reach the finish line at Camping América. Wetsuits are optional for this event, though their use places participants into a separate, non-standard category.
