Vansbrosimningen

In the 1690s, the village of Äppelbo hosted the headquarters of the Västerdal regiment, an infantry unit that deployed soldiers to European battlefields under the command of Swedish monarchs like Charles XII. The military significance of this Dalarna landscape has long faded, but the rivers that once moved troops and supplies now host a different kind of movement. Swimmers today navigate the same currents that defined the region's historical geography, transitioning from the gentle flow of the Vanån into the challenging resistance of the Västerdalälven.

The current and the course

The Vansbrosimningen event, established in 1950, requires participants to master two distinct hydraulic conditions. The 3,000-meter course begins with a 2,000-meter downstream stretch in the Vanån, where the river speed assists forward progress. The final 1,000 meters demand a tactical shift, as swimmers turn into the Västerdal River to fight against the incoming current. This reversal of flow is the defining characteristic of the race, forcing a transition from glide to power. During the final leg, the Vansbro church, perched on its pine-covered hill, serves as a consistent navigational landmark on the eastern bank.

Historical currents and biodiversity

The riverbeds beneath the participants hold evidence of an industrial past; the region was a center for Iron Age iron production, with smelting remains cataloged at over 100 sites along the Dalälven banks. While focusing on stroke rate, swimmers may pass through waters that are part of the protected Natura 2000 network, specifically within the Gönan river system. This area supports sensitive aquatic life, including the freshwater pearl mussel and the rare European bullhead. The human history of the site extends to the Sami people, whose presence near Äppelbo was documented by Carl von Linné during his 1734 expedition. The race continues annually in early July, inviting swimmers to test their conditioning against the combined forces of river currents and regional history.
