About the race

The rhythmic sound of your stroke is the only thing interrupting the silence as you glide past the Arkoudes, those curious rocky islets at the entrance of the bay. They loom about twenty feet above the waterline, their natural contours eerily mimicking the forms of bears, with distinct shapes that seem to watch your progress toward the heart of the crater. This is the UltraSwim 33.3 Milos, a race that demands more than just endurance; it asks for a constant awareness of the geological history beneath you. As you navigate the volcanic caldera, the depth shifts from seventy to thirty fathoms, a transition you sense through the changing pressure and the deep, dark blue of the open water.

The Volcanic Shoreline

Your path traces the edge of a landscape shaped by violent eruptions. You will pass the white, vegetation-free rock formations of Sarakiniko, where wave erosion has hollowed out intricate caves. These same caverns once provided shelter for Saracen pirates, a stark reminder of the island’s defensive history. Further along, the coast reveals the legacy of the Peloponnesian War; in 416 BC, the Athenian invasion turned these peaceful shores into a site of immense human tragedy, leaving the island scarred for generations. You might also spot the subtle signs of the ancient Milesian weight system, a testament to a time when this island minted its own currency, marked by the iconic apple symbol, a clever linguistic play on the word 'mêlon'.

Race Logistics and Legacy

This 2026 event is a specialized 'Pioneer' edition, limited to twenty participants to ensure an intimate connection between the founders and the swimmers. Scheduled for May 29, the race prioritizes a purposeful experience over mass participation. The logistics are tailored for such a small group, allowing for a focused, high-support environment as you navigate the varying coastal conditions. While the route captures the essence of the Cyclades, it stays grounded in the practical realities of the Aegean; you will find that the post-swim massages offered at the finish are a necessary relief for the shoulders. For those already familiar with our circuit, this event offers a distinct, more personal rhythm compared to the UltraSwim 33.3 Greece, while remaining a perfect prelude for swimmers who might also join the SwimTrek Milos Explorer the following day. Along the way, you may catch glimpses of the traditional syrmata houses in the village of Klima, where fishermen once stored their boats in the lower chambers. History, both ancient and recent, lingers here—from the Bronze Age remnants at Phylakopi to the somber memory of the SS Artemis Pitta, lost during the wartime years.
