Travesía Uniendo Faros

The Travesía Alicante 2026 takes place on September 19, 2026, marking the 125th anniversary of the local port. This sea-based event offers five distinct distances—1km, 2.5km, 5km, 10km, and 20km—connecting the lighthouse at Santa Pola to the Faro del Cabo de las Huertas. Swimmers navigate these Mediterranean waters alongside approximately 600 participants, following a tradition that dates back to the early days of competitive open water swimming in Spain.

Historical and natural landmarks

As you swim, the coastline reveals the prominent Mount Benacantil, which rises 169 meters above the city. Keen observers can spot the 'la cara del moro'—a natural rock formation on its south-western slope—while the medieval Castle of Santa Barbara looms overhead. Its oldest foundations, known as 'La Torreta,' date back to the 11th century and provide a constant navigation reference from the water. Further offshore, the route draws inspiration from the Tabarca Island marine reserve, a sanctuary of Posidonia oceanica meadows. These protected waters host a variety of marine life, including groupers and the occasional loggerhead sea turtle. The area is steeped in history, from the remnants of the 1709 siege of the castle to the memory of the SS Stanbrook, which departed this port in 1939. Near the Albufereta, the modern 'El Barco' residential tower stands out for its unique ship-like structure, a coastal landmark since 1963.
