About the race

In the mid-20th century, the waters of the Scottish Highlands became a testing ground for endurance swimmers seeking to push beyond standard coastal boundaries. Among those who navigated these depths was Mike Taylor, who completed a relay of the loch to support the Multiple Sclerosis Society, demonstrating that the challenge lies in managing the physical toll of 35 kilometres rather than just the environmental conditions. Today, the Swim Loch Lomond End-to-End follows this tradition, guiding participants from the southern gateway of Balloch toward the northern reaches of Ardlui in a single-day exertion that demands a 14-hour completion limit.

The water and the landscape

The character of the swim is defined by the loch's dimictic cycle, a natural mixing process that occurs in spring and autumn, ensuring the water column remains thermally active. Swimmers traverse a dramatic shift in topography: while the southern basin remains shallow at under 30 metres, the northern section drops rapidly to a maximum depth of 190 metres, a transition that alters the visual experience of the blue-black water as you head north. Along the way, the route passes the island of Ellanderroch, where the remains of an ancient oak forest recall its former use as a fisherman’s shelter, including a hollow tree trunk famously reinforced with concrete following a lightning strike.

Navigating these miles, you will pass the Clan Colquhoun ancestral lands, where the historic Rossdhu House now serves as the clubhouse for the local golf club, overlooking your path. The horizon to the south is anchored by the distinct profile of Duncryne Hill, a reliable visual marker used by locals to gauge position near the village of Gartocharn. While Inchmurrin remains the largest freshwater island in the British Isles, you will also spot the flat silhouette of Clairinsh, which from a distance resembles the shape of a fish. For those seeking shorter, high-intensity formats, the region also hosts Go Swim Loch Lomond in late August. Whether participating in skins or a wetsuit, the swim remains a raw, measured interaction with the largest expanse of freshwater in Great Britain.
