Sheko Challenge — Extreme Open Water Swim

Distance: 2.2km

About the race

The morning at Back Beach begins with a unique stillness that defines the village of Shek O. While the rest of Hong Kong Island accelerates into its frantic pace, this coastal corner remains anchored by the 1891 temple, a structure that has watched over the local fishing community for generations. The Ocean Recovery Alliance organizes the Sheko Challenge on September 5th, bringing a dedicated crowd of swimmers to these shores who prioritize the rhythm of the tides over the concrete skyline of the city center. For those who enjoy this circuit, the season often continues with the Clean Half Extreme Marathon Swim, while others seeking shorter, high-intensity formats might have already participated in the Middle Island Challenge earlier in the year.

The water and the horizon

Swimming in these waters requires an awareness of the environment that goes beyond the stroke. The bay is notorious for its powerful surf and a steep underwater slope, which contribute to some of the highest drowning rates in the territory. The currents here are relentless; when you are in the water, you are navigating the same forces that make this spot a destination for surfers. As you move through the course, your perspective shifts with the landscape. To the north, the 312-meter high Pottinger Peak dominates the view, a constant presence that looms over the bay. Turning your gaze further out, the island of Tung Lung Chau emerges clearly on the horizon, providing a distinct landmark for navigation. Closer to the headland, you swim past the uninhabited island of Tai Tau Chau, linked to the shore by a natural gravel tombolo that is visible when the light hits the shallow water just right. While the competition is fierce, the surrounding Shek O Country Park is home to surprising biodiversity, including the rare Uroballus carlei spider, though it remains hidden from the swimmer's view in the foliage of the slopes above. Whether you choose the 1500m sprint or the 15000m endurance test, you are sharing the water with a maritime history that is as rugged as the coastline itself.

Where to stay

Shek O is characterized by its relaxed village atmosphere, offering limited but authentic stay options. You will find small, family-run guesthouses and historic village homes that provide a quiet retreat near the beach. Due to the area's geography and conservation status, large-scale resorts are absent, keeping the scale intimate. Expect to pay between $120 and $250 USD per night depending on the proximity to the waterfront and the season. Booking well in advance is essential as the village is small and popular with weekend visitors seeking to escape the urban heat.

Things to do nearby

The weekend in Shek O is best spent exploring the coastline beyond the race course. Renting a kayak or SUP is the standard way to reach the nearby rocky coves that are inaccessible by foot. For those preferring land, the hiking trails leading up to the ridges around the bay offer panoramic views of the South China Sea. After your swim, the local village area features casual, open-air eateries where you can sample fresh seafood. The area is also known for its historical architecture and coastal walking paths that showcase the region's natural geography.
