In the early medieval period, this area was a critical defensive node; in 1018, the Abodrite prince Mistislaw famously sought safety within the island fortress while fleeing the attacking Lutici tribe. Local lore warns of the Petermännchen, an impish ghost said to inhabit the castle cellars. Since its inception in 2005, the event has evolved from a point-to-point race starting at the Kaninchenwerder island into the current loop format that anchors the summer calendar. The nearby Schwerin Cathedral once served as a primary site for pilgrims following the 1222 arrival of a reliquary said to contain a drop of Christ's blood, cementing the city's role as a major religious hub.
