Moselschwimmen Koblenz 2026

The Moselschwimmen Koblenz is an annual river swim held in July, organized by the local DLRG branch. The event takes place in the Moselle, a significant tributary where the water flow and river conditions define the challenge for participants. As swimmers navigate the current, they pass through a landscape shaped by two millennia of history, beginning at the confluence where the Moselle meets the Rhine. This meeting point, known as the German Corner, has held strategic importance since the Roman era when the settlement was established as 'Confluentes'.

The river view

While swimming, the perspective of the city changes significantly. To the east, the massive stone walls and bastions of the 11th-century fortress dominate the horizon, looming over the riverbank and providing a constant point of reference. Closer to the water, the architectural history of the city remains visible. Swimmers pass near the submerged stone remnants of a bridge constructed by the Romans in 49 AD, a silent indicator of the city's long-standing status as a military outpost. Further along, the course brings into view the Balduin Bridge, a 14th-century Gothic structure featuring 14 distinct arches that has served as a primary crossing for centuries.

Historical context

The river has been a silent witness to eras of destruction and political change. During the 1688 siege, forces under Marshal de Boufflers bombarded the city, leaving much of the historic center in ruins. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the banks of the river hosted a different kind of gathering, as Koblenz became a center for royalist émigrés who dubbed the city 'Klein-Paris' while plotting against the revolutionary government. Today, the DLRG manages the event logistics to ensure safety within the active waterway, maintaining a tradition that draws swimmers to experience these historic landmarks from the unique vantage point of the Moselle's currents.
