About the race
The limestone walls tower above, their stark white verticality plunging directly into the deep blue. As you stroke through these narrow, flooded valleys, you are navigating the same submerged geography that ancient rivers carved into the dolomite long before the Mediterranean sea rose to meet them. Looking down, the silence of the depth is broken only by the rhythm of your own breath, a stark contrast to the ferocity historically associated with these waters. Mariners have long feared the sudden violence of the Gulf of Lion, a name coined in the 13th century to describe the unpredictable swells that mimic the raw power of a lion’s charge.
This is the MC Swim Challenge 8, a 25-kilometer endurance test starting from the Port de la Pointe Rouge. The event demands respect for the Mistral, the cold, dry wind that clears the skies but can turn the surface volatile with little notice. While you swim, you pass the coordinates of the Calanque de la Triperie, where diver Henri Cosquer discovered a submerged entrance in 1985. Deep below the surface, hidden in the dark, lies a cave containing prehistoric engravings of bison and great auks, silent witnesses to a world that existed 30,000 years ago. Further along the coast, you might spot the structure of the marégraphe de Marseille, an 1883 installation that remains the fundamental altimetric reference point for all of mainland France.
Endurance and the coast
Logistics for such a distance require careful preparation, as the route transitions through diverse marine ecosystems, including areas where deep-water corals like *Lophelia pertusa* thrive on the seabed. For those arriving early to the region, the Défi de Monte-Cristo provides a shorter, high-intensity experience just a week prior to this ultra-marathon. The challenge is as much a mental negotiation with the elements as it is a physical endeavor, especially when the current shifts near the rugged limestone cliffs. By the time you reach the final kilometers, the history of the coastline—from the ancient art hidden in the caves to the scientific precision of the tide gauge—serves as a constant companion in the water.

Where to stay
Marseille offers a variety of lodgings, ranging from traditional fishermen's houses converted into boutique guesthouses in the Goudes area to more modern hotels near the Port de la Pointe Rouge. Prices fluctuate significantly depending on proximity to the coast, generally ranging from €120 to €350 per night during the summer season. For those seeking a closer connection to the environment, several campsites operate along the perimeter of the national park, offering a more utilitarian experience for participants arriving with support crews.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the water, the region is defined by its limestone topography, perfect for guided trekking along the cliff-top trails that overlook the race route. Visitors often explore the coastal coves via kayak or stand-up paddleboard to appreciate the scale of the flooded valleys from a different perspective. Gastronomic traditions are centered on local seafood, with many harbor-side establishments offering tastings of regional specialties that reflect the maritime history of the port city.
