Extreme 150 km Volga Odyssey

About the race
The current presses against your left shoulder—a steady, rhythmic pressure that serves as a reminder of the river's colossal scale. Just four meters beneath you, the rusted hull of the Saratov icebreaker rests in the silt, a ghost of 1895 technology lying not far from the bridge in Engels. You are conquering the powerful flow of the Volga, a water artery carrying thousands of cubic meters of water per second toward the Caspian Sea. This is the environment of the Extreme 150 km Volga Odyssey, a race demanding ultimate endurance in one of Eurasia's most legendary basins.
Historical currents. As you progress, the landscape shifts: industrial steel gives way to historical memory. To the west, the city's silhouette was once defined by the spires of St. Clement's Cathedral. When the building was converted into a cinema during the Soviet era, its architectural character was permanently altered, losing the visual markers of the German community that had lived there since the 18th century. Further downstream, the echo of this displacement still resonates: in 1941, the forced deportation of 400,000 Volga Germans to Central Asia effectively erased a centuries-old cultural presence from these banks.
Navigating the basin. South of the city center, your path follows the ancient trade routes of the Golden Horde city of Uvek. Archaeological remains, submerged or buried along these banks, once received goods from Egypt and China before the city's destruction in 1395. The water here remains calm compared to the northern sections, yet the sheer distance of this 150 km challenge requires constant attention to hydration and pacing. As you swim, you will pass the area where Yuri Gagarin landed after returning from orbit—a site now home to the Park of Space Conquerors. Participants in the 2026 race, scheduled for August 4th, must manage their energy wisely across these vast, flat expanses, maintaining a steady stroke in the shifting currents of the great river.

Where to stay
Saratov offers a mix of Soviet-era hotels repurposed for modern travel and riverside apartments. You will find boutique guest houses located near the Volga embankment, providing quick access to the start lines. Camping is common along the rural stretches of the river, though most participants favor hotels in the city center to manage the logistical requirements of a 150km event. Prices for a standard double room typically range between $35 and $70 per night, depending on proximity to the riverfront.
Things to do nearby
The region is defined by its aviation history and archaeological depth. Visitors often explore the Park of Space Conquerors at Gagarin Field to see the monument commemorating the first human spaceflight. For those interested in the medieval history of the Golden Horde, the Uvek excavation sites offer guided tours of recent findings. The river itself serves as a hub for kayaking and SUP excursions, allowing a closer look at the diverse steppe vegetation that borders the Volga floodplains.
