About the race

Dr. Dietrich Ewers, a local figure who turned a spontaneous 1998 demonstration into a city tradition, famously reminded participants that while you can swim in the Elbe, you are by no means required to. This spirit of choice defines the Elbeschwimmen, a non-competitive annual gathering that invites swimmers to navigate 3.5 kilometers of the river that gave its name to the surrounding valley. The name itself, rooted in the Sorbian word 'Drežďany' for forest-dwellers, acknowledges the historical landscape through which you drift. As you enter the water, you are not merely swimming; you are moving through a corridor that has served as a primary transport artery since the introduction of steamboat navigation in 1837.

The river through time

Navigating downstream, the current is your primary engine, averaging 1.1 meters per second. This flow has shaped the city's character, for better or worse, most notably during the catastrophic 2002 flood, where water levels rose nine meters above normal. Today, the river reflects a more peaceful resilience. Gliding past the Augustus Bridge, you are crossing a site where stone crossings have connected the southern trading settlements with the northern Sorbian districts since 1220. The experience is framed by the Elbe Valley microclimate, which keeps this stretch of central Germany among the warmest in the region, often providing favorable conditions even as you pass the sites where the 1945 bombing of Dresden fundamentally altered the city skyline.

This event operates without a registration fee or formal competitive pressure, relying on individual responsibility for safety rather than a closed course. Participants range from children as young as eight to seasoned veterans over eighty, often joined by local characters like the 'Hofnarr Fröhlich' in costume. Since the event's origin as a one-time protest, the logistical reliance on the river's natural flow has remained constant. The route is subject to the day's water levels, and the absence of an entry fee reflects the grassroots nature of the community that gathers each August. You are essentially testing the strength of the current that has defined the life of this valley for centuries.
