About the race

The Oulankajoki river hosts a long-distance swimming challenge annually in August, offering two distinct distances: 12 kilometers and 24 kilometers. Participants depart from the Ruka village area, utilizing organized transport to reach the river entry points within the Oulanka National Park. This event functions as a downstream swim, where the river's flow assists progress through a landscape shaped by both geological history and military legacies.

The river environment

As you navigate the current, the surrounding wilderness reflects the rugged character of the Kuusamo region. The riverbanks are part of a habitat where Finland's four large predators—brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and wolverines—roam, though sightings remain uncommon for those in the water. Swimmers may occasionally spot eagles or swans near the river’s edge. The water temperature in this latitude is influenced by the short, intense summer season, with local lakes like Pääjärvi reaching 18–19 °C in July before the long winter freeze sets in. The environment is strictly regulated due to the national park status, requiring all participants and support crews to adhere to specific conservation protocols regarding shoreline access and waste management.

Historical markers in the landscape

The river's course passes through terrain marked by human activity dating back millennia. Archaeological evidence of Stone Age settlements, including artifacts from 2000–3000 BCE, has been recovered from the shores of nearby lakes. More recent history is etched into the local memory; in the cemetery of Kuusamo, two church bells cast in 1698 and 1721 were buried by German soldiers during the 1944 Lapland War to prevent their destruction. The bells were recovered in 1959, long after the conflict had ended. Nearby, the natural landscape features extreme transitions, such as the 13.7-meter-high Kiutaköngäs waterfall, which serves as a reminder of the area’s geological intensity, having once recorded a temperature of -48 °C. The event logistics are handled by local organizers who manage the complex transport requirements from the finish area in Ruka to the remote start points, ensuring that the focus remains on the downstream navigation of the Oulankajoki.

Useful info

The event takes place in a National Park, so strict environmental regulations must be followed. A moderate level of swimming ability and physical endurance is required. Shuttle transport services from Ruka are provided for participants and companions. Registration usually opens in October of the previous year. A wetsuit is recommended/required given the nature of the river.

How to get there

Where to stay

Accommodations in the Ruka area primarily consist of modern ski-resort lodges, private holiday cabins, and full-service hotels located near the village center. Many lodges feature traditional saunas and drying rooms for gear, which are standard for the region. Depending on the level of amenities and proximity to the event hub, prices typically range from 120€ to 250€ per night for a standard unit, with higher rates during the peak summer and winter seasons.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, the weekend revolves around the wilderness of the Oulanka National Park. Visitors often engage in guided hiking along the Karhunkierros trail, which offers views of the river canyon from above. Kayaking and SUP tours are common on the calmer sections of the Oulankajoki, while the local berry-picking season in August is a staple activity. For those interested in the area's heritage, the Kuusamo local history museum provides context on the region's recovery after the 1944 conflict.
