About the race

On the morning of the Palm to Shelly race, the northern shoreline of Sydney wakes up to a steady rhythm of support boats preparing to shadow the field. Organised by Another Level Performance, this 24 km ultra-marathon is a demanding fixture for those targeting long-distance challenges, serving as a critical qualifier for the Australian Triple Crown. The event draws a tight-knit community of marathon swimmers, including local figures like Andy Donaldson, whose 2023 world-leading achievements have cemented the region’s status as a hub for endurance training. Whether tackling the 24 km traverse or the 10 km start from offshore Narrabeen, entrants operate within a rigorous safety framework that mandates dedicated boat support within 10 metres of the swimmer at all times.

The coastline and its history

As you navigate the 25 beaches defining the Northern coastline, you are swimming through territory with deep historical roots. The Gadigal people have inhabited this region for at least 30,000 years, and the shoreline retains the character of that ancient presence, echoing the descriptions of Port Jackson as a vast, secure harbor noted by early arrivals in 1788. You will pass the Long Reef wave-cut platform, a striking geological feature where the sea has carved deep into the headland. The course offers a perspective on both the natural landscape—such as the endangered Themeda grasslands clinging to the cliff tops—and the modern infrastructure that connects the continent to the world, including the underwater landing point of the PPC-1 cable. While you focus on your stroke, you are moving through waters where the legacy of 20th-century coastal defense remains visible in the fortification systems of Middle Head, silent reminders of the 1942 submarine incursions. For those who find this distance a test, swimmers looking to build their endurance often participate in the 3 Points Challenge held along these same coastal waters, or join the Narrabeen Beach Challenge to further adapt to the specific currents of the Northern Beaches. With entry fees ranging from 125 to 310 EUR, the logistics are significant, covering the complex coordination required for boat support and maritime safety. While wetsuits are permitted, they render participants ineligible for prize rankings, maintaining a focus on traditional marathon standards.
