4th Discovery Bay Open Water Race Challenge & Family Relay

The 2026 edition of this sea swim takes place on August 30th off the coast of Lantau Island. Swimmers face a sub-tropical marine environment during the peak of the typhoon season, which necessitates strict monitoring of local sea conditions. If severe weather occurs, organizers may suspend ferry services, directly impacting access to the venue. The race features multiple distances and a family-oriented relay format, catering to a range of abilities within the controlled waters of Discovery Bay. For those seeking a different intensity earlier in the season, the Middle Island Challenge held in late May serves as a primary reference for Hong Kong open water conditions.

Terrain and marine life

As swimmers move away from the shore, the silhouette of Lantau Island dominates the horizon with steep, grass-covered slopes rising directly from the sea. Looking toward the land, the 465-meter peak of Lo Fu Tau, known locally as Tiger's Head, provides a constant navigation point. The route passes near the traditional fishing settlement of Nim Shue Wan, where the maritime history of the area persists amidst modern residential development. Further out, the small island of Peng Chau marks the eastern boundary of the swimming field, identifiable by the bridge connecting it to the islet of Tai Lei.

Water entries in this channel occasionally coincide with the habitat of the Chinese white dolphin. While construction and maritime traffic have fragmented their range, the species remains present in these waters. The swim operates under a rigorous safety protocol, reflecting the volatility of the regional climate during late summer. Water temperatures in August consistently remain high, typically ranging between 26°C and 29°C, and the primary technical challenge involves maintaining a direct line despite the currents generated by the complex topography of the bay.
